New Year, New You
Posted on January 28 2019
January is a great month for setting goals and making positive changes to your life, so if you're like us and you believe in making positive changes to your life – January and February is the perfect time to tap into the New You...
Take up new watersports such as stand up paddleboarding, start using a refillable water bottle to reduce single-use plastics and think marine conservation when you’re out on the water. There’s so much potential when it comes to maximising your wellbeing and lifestyle choices, here are a few that are on the Aqua Living checklist for 2019:
New Year, New Sport
Relax, boating and watersports are good for your health. The Canal and River Trust’s Boat Owners’ Views survey (they surveyed everyone who had a boat licence 2015-2018) revealed that no less than 1760 (76%) of respondents would recommend waterways to other boaters and that mental and physical wellbeing are the boaters’ biggest motivations. The Aqua Living crew recommend joining your local sailing club which usually offers a comprehensive social and on-the-water activity programme, great fun for all the family.
If you’re already a watersports enthusiast, then 2019 could be the year for you to try your hand at a new sport. With more than 20 Royal Yachting Association (RYA) centres in the UK now offering foiling instructors, if you sail and windsurf you can take to the next level. Thinking of heading to the beach with your family? You could try standup paddleboarding or why not try swimming in your local lido. We have plenty of standup paddleboards, snorkels and goggles to help you take the plunge.
New Year, New Habits
You’ll see from our previous blog, Reduce Your Plastic Footprint, that we’re passionate about saying no to single-use plastics and getting into the reuse and recycle mind-set. This year, on 23 January, we’re starting as we mean to go on by taking part in an initiative that’s local to us: the Refill Chichester Launch.
With an aim to make it easy for people to refill their water bottles on the go, this might be a West Sussex scheme (which has also been recently launched in Arundel) but it’s sure to have a global effect as awareness grows and people start using their refillable water bottles to help #StopThePlasticTide. You can read more about the event and our involvement on our blog here.
New Year, New Focus
Feel inspired by our first and second suggestions? It’s time to combine the two with a new attitude to your natural environment while you’re out on the water… With 10% of all Aqua Living sales donated to the Marine Conservation Society, we’re keen to promote safe boating and watersports with regards to the marine life and wildlife in our seas and coastal environments. The RYA offers a handy leaflet, The Green Wildlife Guide for Boaters, and here are a few of their top tips for maintaining harmony:
- Find out if areas you visit are protected and why
- Use recognised landing places when going ashore
- Slow down so as not to create excessive wash
